Phil Ford won the John R. Wooden Award in 1978 as the best player in college basketball while playing for the University of North Carolina. A 6-0 point guard, Ford was a master at controlling the pace of the game, distributing the ball, and scoring. During his senior season, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.7 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game, leading the Tar Heels to an impressive 27-3 record and a Final Four appearance. Ford was known for his exceptional basketball IQ, court vision, and leadership. He could score in a variety of ways, from his smooth jump shot to his ability to drive to the basket, and he was a constant threat in transition. His ability to make his teammates better set him apart, making him one of the most complete point guards in college basketball. Winning the Wooden Award capped an outstanding college career for Ford.
