Paige Bueckers of Connecticut was the winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award as the most outstanding player in women’s college basketball. Bueckers is the first freshman to win the Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year honor. This marks the sixth time that the winner is from the University of Connecticut following Breanna Stewart (2015 & ’16), Maya Moore (2009 & ’11) and Tina Charles (2010). She became the first Connecticut player to ever score 30 or more points in three consecutive games and set the school record for points in her NCAA debut against High Point. She is the first freshman to earn the Women’s Wooden Award after leading the Huskies in points, assists, steals and three-point field goal percentage. She was a two-time Big East Player of the Week and an eight-time Big East Freshman of the Week and scored in double digits in 28 games, including 14 20-point games.
