Marques Johnson won the first-ever John R. Wooden Award in 1977 as the best player in college basketball while playing for UCLA, the school John Wooden guided to 10 NCAA championships. A versatile 6-6 forward, Johnson had a standout season, averaging 21.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. He was a key contributor to a UCLA team that continued the tradition of excellence under Wooden. Known for his scoring ability, rebounding, and defensive presence, Johnson was a complete player. He had an excellent mid-range jump shot, was tough inside the paint, and could also facilitate for his teammates. His all-around play helped lead UCLA to a NCAA Tournament appearance, although they fell short of capturing another championship. Winning the Wooden Award marked the pinnacle of Johnson’s college career. His leadership on the court and ability to excel in multiple facets of the game made him the best player in the country in 1977.
