Lionel Simmons won the John R. Wooden Award in 1990 after an incredible senior season at La Salle University. Simmons, the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division I history, beat runner-up Gary Payton of Oregon State. A versatile forward, Simmons averaged 26.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, leading the Explorers to a 30-2 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Known as "The L-Train," he became one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball history, finishing his career with 3,217 points, which was third all-time at the time. Simmons was a dynamic player who could score inside and outside while also excelling defensively. His all-around talent and leadership made him the clear choice for the Wooden Award. He also won the Naismith and NABC Player of the Year awards, cementing his place among the best college players of his era. After college, Simmons was selected seventh overall in the 1990 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.
