Jason Williams of Duke, the runner-up in 2001, won the 26th John R. Wooden Award as college basketball's top male player. "Wow. This is a great award," Williams said, accepting the trophy from Wooden in a presentation at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. "This one just tops them all. Coach Wooden represents everything I've always stood for -- pride, integrity and trust." As a starter for three years at Duke, Williams averaged 19.3 points per game, 6.0 assists and 3.7 rebounds for the Blue Devils, while shooting .453 from the floor and .393 from 3-point range. He also led Duke to a 95-13 (.880) record and the 2001 NCAA National Championship. At the final game in his junior year, Williams’ No. 22 jersey was retired at Cameron Indoor Stadium.. He is the third Duke player in four years to win. Shane Battier beat out Williams last year, and Elton Brand won in 1999.
