1988 Winner

Danny Manning won the John R. Wooden Award in 1988 after an unforgettable senior season at the University of Kansas. As a dominant forward, Manning averaged 24.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, leading the Jayhawks to an improbable national championship victory. His leadership and all-around excellence earned him the nickname "Danny and the Miracles," as he carried Kansas through the NCAA Tournament, culminating in a legendary 31-point, 18-rebound performance in the championship game against Oklahoma. Manning was a versatile scorer who could dominate in the post, hit mid-range jumpers, and defend at a high level. His ability to elevate his game in crucial moments made him the clear choice for the Wooden Award. A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Manning had a storied playing career at Kansas where he was the consensus National Player of the Year in 1988, a two-time All-American (1987, ’88) and three-time Big Eight Conference Player of the Year (1986-88).
