Award Winner
Chris Mullin
St. John's University
Chris Mullin won the John R. Wooden Award in 1985 as the best player in college basketball while leading St. John’s University to one of its greatest seasons. A 6-6 sharpshooting forward, Mullin was the heart and soul of the Red Storm, averaging 19.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game during his senior season. His smooth shooting, high basketball IQ, and leadership made him the most dominant player in the nation. Mullin’s stellar play helped St. John’s reach the Final Four for the first time since 1952. Coached by the legendary Lou Carnesecca, Mullin was the leader of a powerhouse team that also featured future Wooden Award winner Walter Berry. His ability to score efficiently, especially from mid-range and beyond the arc, set him apart from his peers. He finished his college career as St. John’s all-time leading scorer, a record that still stands today.
