Alana Beard won the John R. Wooden Award in 2004, marking a milestone in her standout career at Duke University and the first time the Wooden Award was given to a women’s basketball player. The 5-11 forward was a force on both ends of the floor, leading Duke to a Final Four appearance and earning the honor as the best player in women’s college basketball that season. Beard, who was named ACC Player of the Year, averaged 19.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.6 steals per game, showcasing her all-around game and ability to dominate offensively and defensively. Beard’s ability to score from anywhere on the court made her a matchup nightmare. She was known for her quick first step, scoring ability off the dribble, and outstanding perimeter shooting. Additionally, her tenacious defense and ability to create turnovers helped set her apart as one of the most complete players in the country.
