Darrell Griffith won the John R. Wooden Award in 1980 as the best player in college basketball while playing for the University of Louisville. Known as "Dr. Dunkenstein,” Griffith was an electrifying guard who stood out for his incredible athleticism and leaping ability. During his senior season, Griffith averaged 22.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, helping lead Louisville to a NCAA Championship in 1980. Griffith’s combination of scoring, defense, and leadership made him one of the most dynamic players in the country. He was known for his acrobatic dunks, ability to drive to the basket, and smooth jump shot. His scoring ability was a key factor in Louisville’s success that season, and his leadership on the court made him the centerpiece of the team. Winning the Wooden Award and his performance in the NCAA Tournament cemented Griffith’s place as one of the top players in the nation.
