Ralph Sampson

University of Virginia

1982 & 1983 Winner

Ralph Sampson became the first time winner of the John R. Wooden Award in 1983 as the best player in college basketball while playing for the University of Virginia. A 7-4 center, Sampson dominated both ends of the court, averaging 19.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game during his senior season. His combination of size, skill, and athleticism made him nearly impossible to stop in the paint. Sampson’s stellar play helped Virginia become one of the top teams in the country, and he led them to the Final Four in 1981. He was known for his ability to score in the post, as well as his shot-blocking and rebounding prowess. Sampson was a force of nature, and his performances earned him the Wooden Award, solidifying his status as the nation’s top player. His success at Virginia wasn’t just about statistics, though. Sampson’s leadership and basketball IQ played a key role in his team’s success.
