Award Winner
Walter Berry
St. John's University
Walter Berry won the John R. Wooden Award in 1986 as the best player in college basketball while starring for St. John’s University. It was the second straight season St. John’s had a plater take home the Wooden Award after Chris Mullin won in 1985. A dominant 6-8 forward, Berry had an outstanding junior season, averaging 23.0 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. His ability to score inside, rebound, and defend made him an unstoppable force in the college game. Berry transferred to St. John’s from San Jacinto Junior College and made an immediate impact, helping the team reach the 1985 Final Four alongside Mullin. In his Wooden Award-winning season, Berry became the focal point of the team, leading St. John’s to another strong campaign. His signature move, the "Spin Doctor", made him nearly impossible to guard in the post and solidified him as the best college player in the nation.
