Award Winner
David Robinson
United States Naval Academy
David Robinson won the John R. Wooden Award in 1987 as the best college basketball player in the nation. Playing for the United States Naval Academy, Robinson had an incredible senior season, averaging 28.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game. His dominance on both ends of the floor made him a clear choice for the award, which is given annually to the most outstanding men's college basketball player. Robinson’s path to the Wooden Award was unique. Initially recruited as a 6-6 freshman, he grew to 7-1, transforming into a dominant center. His agility, shot-blocking, and offensive skills were unmatched at the collegiate level. That season, he led Navy to the NCAA Tournament and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in college basketball history. Winning the Wooden Award would lead to him becoming the first overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft where he was selected by the San Antonio Spurs.
