Indiana forward Calbert Cheaney was a runaway winner of the Wooden Award. Cheaney, the Big Ten's career scoring leader, averaged 22.4 points per game and led the Hoosiers to the Big 10 championship. Indiana was beaten by Kansas, 83-77, in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional final. Indiana finished the season with a 31-4 record and won 17 of 18 Big 10 games. Junior forwards Jamal Mashburn of Kentucky, Anfernee Hardaway of Memphis State, Michigan sophomore forward Chris Webber, North Carolina junior center Eric Montross and Duke senior guard Bobby Hurley, the NCAA's all-time assist leader, were among the finalists for the award. "It is definitely an honor to win an award that has gone to such great players as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and David Robinson," Cheaney said in a taped statement made before the presentation. "The award is special to everyone in college basketball because it carries the name of Coach Wooden."
